VRS: Degenerate Art from the 1930s is an editorial exploration of the artists and movements condemned by the Nazi regime under the label of “degenerate art.” Created at ArtCenter College of Design, the project examines a period when artistic expression became an act of defiance against censorship and oppression.

The book translates this spirit of rebellion into its visual structure. Disrupted grids, shifting columns, and unconventional image placement challenge traditional editorial conventions, creating a reading experience that reflects the tension, resistance, and expressive freedom of the artists it explores.

Typography establishes a sense of restriction and control, with shifts in scale, orientation, and placement introducing tension throughout the book. A chronological narrative traces the events of the period, alternating between archival imagery, historical context, and expressive compositions to create a contrast between order and disruption. Archival imagery interrupts the structured columns of text, challenging the rigidity of the grid. This deliberate disruption reflects the spirit of rebellion and resistance explored throughout the book.
